Islington Square Unveils Free Festival of Culture

A spectacular free Festival of Culture will be held on the site of Islington Square, the former North London Mail Centre, which is currently being transformed into a new 500,000 sq ft shopping, leisure and residential district fronting Upper Street.

For one weekend only – 4 to 6 December 2015 – the Festival of Culture will showcase well-known music and comedy acts, together with a variety of performances such as gospel choirs and buskers, an exhibition about Islington, community gardening, children’s entertainment, and workshops. The emphasis is on local talent and both the entertainment and the delicious street food market have something to suit every taste and age-range in this celebration of family, history, culture and the future.

A large pop-up cinema will screen a range of films, from family favourites to cult classics; gardener, writer and photographer Naomi Schillinger will teach a bulb-planting workshop in the pop-up garden; and, a magnificent light display projected onto the building will showcase some of the great features of Islington, past present and future.

Everything is free of charge except the food and drink.

The weekend’s entertainment includes Friday Night is Comedy Night, featuring Richard Herring, Abandoman, Joel Dommett, Imran Yusuf and Miss Hope Springs; a Saturday night musical spectacular with performances from Björn Again, Duke and Nathan Watson; and Danny Toeman and The King’s Head Theatre on Sunday.
The Pop-Up cinema screenings will include Pulp Fiction, About a Boy, Annie Hall, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, BFI historic short films and local documentary Through the Hole in the Wall.
Buskers and further local music acts will perform throughout the weekend.
